Admission and Eligibility
Choosing a nursing home can be a difficult and confusing process. Planning ahead for nursing home placement and knowing what to expect at admission may make the entire process easier.
It is important to look at whether a nursing home is the most appropriate option, or if another type of facility would be more suitable. Nursing home care is expensive, with costs of at least $180 per day for those paying privately. If an insurance company, Medicare or the Medical Assistance Program (Medicaid) will be payers, there are specific medical and financial eligibility criteria that the applicant must meet. The admission process and the accompanying admission paperwork may vary among nursing homes.
